Homework Policy Review and Powerschool for Mathletes:
Doing Math homework on time is required. There are no late grades given except for quiz/test corrections since these need to be done so that students can review/analyze their errors. It is most beneficial to do quiz/test corrections on time to receive “booster” points:)
Please review: (Don’t be late, Make the Date!!)
Have you seen the rubric for Homework Points Yet? You can see this on the math expectation letter…
- Mathletes receive a weekly math calendar with homework assignments for that week. Mathletes may use their math calendar or my blog (blog will have more details/resources than math calendar)
- Mathletes are given 3 homework tickets per quarter and may use at their discretion for a time extension on a homework item rather than receive a “0″. (Algebra 8 students will receive 3 tickets only for the 1st two quarters. 3rd Quarter = 2 tickets and 4th Quarter = 1 ticket).
- Mathletes may bring in their parent signature on a note or in their homework journal (preferred way of doing homework) for a time extenstion when needed. - homework problems are the push-ups/work-outs practice.
- Have you ever heard of “Harold and the purple crayon”? Well it inspired me with an idea to help mathletes seek data from their homework when they prepare for quizzes/tests and their district math assessments. Mathletes are required to get a math journal/composition book (graph or lined) so that they can do their daily math homework in a diary/journal format. When we check together, mathletes will be given a purple pen to use to make edits/redo next to each problem. When it is time to prepare for a quiz/test, they are to look back at their “purple” so that they can focus on those concepts to review. I am hoping that students will use the journal method so that their work is in order to go back and easily review as a strategy to prepare for cumulative assessments.
- It is ESSENTIAL that students learn how to utilize their resources and check over their homework with the back of their book solutions or with www.hotmath.com (A great strategy when having trouble with the homework) before class.
- If a student does not have a homework ticket or a parent signature, then a “0″ will be given. Again, no late grades will be accepted except for quiz/test corrections.
- Parents may e-mail for a time extension, but PLEASE, it must be done before the class meets, not after. (Thank you!)
- *****If a student is overwhelmed with homework or any other situation arises, a student may opt to do every other problem with a parent signature and that will be accepted as full assignment. This option is good because the student has “something that is better than nothing” and can move on to the new homework.
- Showing work is sharing steps/strategy/evidence of thinking and must be communicated in written form - at the very minimum, the problem from the book should be written to accompany the solution. If a mathlete chooses to only write the solution, the homework score will be 1.5/3.
- If homework is not done for actual due date (no matter what the reason), need to see Coach Huff during lunch. Due to only 4 classes per week, shorter class times and larger classes, time is very valuable. Mathletes must see me during lunch for assignments that used a homework ticket, parent signature extension and/or absent work so that I do not take time away for learning new material. Lunch time will also provide more time for individual assistance and checking of homework too since mathlete missed the checking for accuracy time during actual due class time. Mathlete will have up to the end of the quarter to see me during lunch or their homework grade for that assignment will remain a “0″. (However, the sooner the better so that material is practiced before the Quests)
- POWERSCHOOL:
- Please note that I use a clipboard (I call it clipboard cruising) to record homework – I use a lot of coding for money market and it is quick for me to meet and greet each student individually.
- Homework grades are posted on a regular basis when time permits. You can expect math grades to be updated every week.
- Quiz/Quest grades will be posted right after I check the quiz/quest. In most cases, the same evening or day after so that mathletes receive their quiz/quests back immediately for effective analysis. (I will always post on my blog under the course page (Pre-Algebra or Algebra) if there is a “roadblock construction” going on in my time frame).
- I try to type comments – depends on the time frame I have at that time…
- please e-mail whenever something is questionable!!!
Please stay connected with Powerschool and feel free to e-mail me at any time! It is so important to me if you have any questions or if your child comes home upset about something that you please contact me ASAP so that we can work together as a team to support your child’s situation – if your child is upset because the pace is too fast or is too slow, please let me know since many children are more comfortable communicating at home rather than at school… no problems, only solutions:)
